The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
FRASER ISLAND ROAD CLOSURE TO PROVIDE SAFE HAVEN FOR FAMILIES
The proposed closure of Hook Point Road on Fraser Island will provide a balance between four wheel drive users and families, Environment Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said today.
“The closure of 18km of beach represents a very small part of Fraser Island, but will provide significant benefits for visiting families and nature.
“We know that 4 wheel driving is important to many people but we need to strike a balance for families who want to be able to use the beach safely.
”Approximately 100 kilometres of the East coast of Fraser Island will still available for driving.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said the move had been in place since 1994 when it was outlined in the Great Sandy Region Management Plan after extensive public consultation.
“The recommendations of that Management Plan are even more relevant today than when first recommended given the higher number of visitors and the growth in four wheel drive ownership.”
Ns Nelson-Carr stressed that no date had been set to close the section of beach and it would occur only after the full signage was put in place and the new beach campgrounds were fully established.
“The QPWS has also upgraded the alternative road and I will be inspecting it myself before the beach is closed.
“The road will be maintained to a standard consistent with a national park that provides a wilderness experience.”
