LOGAN RESIDENTS URGED TO CELEBRATE CHINESE NEW YEAR
Multiculturalism Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has urged Logan residents to get involved in Chinese New Year celebrations which start this weekend.
Ms Nelson-Carr said the Queensland Government, through Multicultural Affairs Queensland, had provided Queensland Chinese United Council $3000 for its new year festival gala night on 24 February at Logan Entertainment Centre.
“Chinese New Year is one of the most popular cultural events in Queensland.
“Celebrations this year, for the Year of the Pig, will be no different.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said Chinese Queenslanders had made an impact in all areas of our society including in business, politics, science, education and the arts.
“The first Chinese settled in Queensland 150 years ago and soon became involved in agriculture and the gold mining boom.
“Over the years, members of the Chinese community have contributed greatly to our state’s economic development.
“In addition, Chinese culture and traditions have enriched our diverse multicultural society.”
Parliamentary Secretary to the Multiculturalism Minister and the first Chinese Australian elected to the Queensland Parliament Michael Choi urged Logan residents to join in the festivities.
“Chinese New Year isn’t about the Chinese celebrating by themselves but about everyone getting together to celebrate the spirit of the festival – family, forgiveness and good fortune,” Mr Choi said.
“The pig is generally considered to be a peace-maker – generous, compassionate, tolerant and understanding of others which bodes well for us all in 2007.
”I encourage everyone to get involved in the Chinese New Year festivities for the Year of the Pig and share in good fortune and prosperity.”
