NEW GRADUATES PATROLLING TO KEEP OUR WATERWAYS SAFE

Queensland’s boating and fishing community will be kept on their toes as a new team of Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officers graduate and begin their roles at QBFP offices across the state.

Andrew Wright will join the local Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries Cairns office and can look forward to a dynamic and inspirational work environment that combines working outdoors, educating the public and enforcement duties.

Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Tim Mulherin said the recruits had excelled in the intensive training course and were now well equipped for their roles of keeping Queensland’s waterways safe.

“After finishing the training, new patrol officers undertake surveillance, inspection and enforcement activities and help protect fisheries and aquatic habitats and maintain marine safety,” Mr Mulherin said.

“During the training graduates not only learnt a considerable amount about legislation that protects our marine life but were also out in the field getting hands on experience from our experts.”

The Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol formed in 1967 and employed just 17 staff. The patrol now has more than 125 highly qualified officers at 25 centres from the Gold Coast to Thursday Island.

The graduation ceremony will be held at Bribie Island’s Joondoburri Conference Centre tomorrow (Friday, 16 February) when the Member for Pumistone Carryn Sullivan will represent Mr Mulherin to congratulate the eight graduates.
