Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
$1 MILLION FOR MONTO LEGACY PROJECT
The State Government will provide $1 million to the Monto Shire Council to help meet the cost of providing a new visitors and community centre in time for Queensland’s 150th birthday in 2009.
Premier Peter Beattie and Minister for Local Government and Planning announced the Monto project would be funded through the Legacy Infrastructure Fund, a $100 million capital works program to create legacies for Queensland’s 150th anniversary.
“2009 is an important year for our State and we need to ensure there are lasting reminders of this milestone,” Mr Beattie said.
“We’ve identified many projects across the State to date that we believe will create a legacy and be enjoyed by generations to come. The Monto proposal is the latest project to be endorsed.”
The Monto project includes construction of a new centre to house a range of visitor and community facilities including a theatrette, café and visitor information centre. Offices would also be included to support the centre.
Mr Beattie said the centre was designed to fill a gap in the facilities and experiences available to locals and visitors.
“Monto is enjoying increasing numbers of weekend visitors from surrounding Shires and Gladstone, with annual visits now topping 90,000,” Mr Beattie said.
“This project will enhance the visitor experience, while providing some valuable new facilities for the local community.”
Minister for Local Government and Planning, Andrew Fraser, said the project – like all others considered for funding – was required to meet specific criteria.
“When we asked Councils to submit their proposals last year, we were looking for practical tributes. That is, projects that would provide real and lasting benefits to the community for years to come,” Mr Fraser said.
“I feel very confident that this project will more than achieve this outcome.”
Mr Fraser said Monto Shire Council was now required to submit a project plan confirming a 2008 completion date and to demonstrate their ability to secure the additional funds required to undertake the project.
