Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
More than 75,000 homes and businesses will benefit from a series of upgrades to ENERGEX’s Sunshine Coast electricity network, Premier Peter Beattie announced at Buderim today.
Among the big ticket items are upgrades to substations in Maroochydore, Caloundra and Kawana and a series of underground cabling projects in the Maroochydore, Mooloolaba and Alexandra Headlands areas.
Premier Peter Beattie said the upgrades would complement existing infrastructure and allow for future growth and power usage in a rapidly expanding area.
“Every working day an average of 24 new domestic premises or commercial businesses connect to the ENERGEX network on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Beattie said.
“Meeting this growing demand requires extensive planning and works and these projects, either recently completed or currently underway, are designed to assist the local electricity network meet current and future expansion.”
Mr Beattie said the upgrades would also provide ENERGEX technicians with greater switching options.
“This will mean quicker power restoration after unexpected power interruptions caused by storms, trees or wildlife hitting powerlines or damage to overhead wires or underground cables.
“The major projects include a $5 million upgrade at the Kawana substation, a $9.2 million upgrade at the West Maroochydore substation and a $9.8 million upgrade at the Caloundra substation.
“These are being supported by $1.2 million upgrade of underground cables in the Alexandra Headlands and Maroochydore area; and two separate projects worth more than $900,000 each to upgrade underground power supplies in the area around ENERGEX’s Mooloolaba substation,” he said.
Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said the projects were part of a record $3 billion-plus five-year capital expenditure program currently being undertaken by ENERGEX.
“In the 2006/07 financial year ENERGEX is spending $643 million on the electricity network while a further $263 million has been committed to maintenance and operation of the network,” Mr Wilson said.
“ENERGEX supplies electricity to a population of around 2.7 million people in south east Queensland through more than 50,000 km of overhead and underground power lines.
“The company’s distribution area includes over half a million power poles, 43,000 transformers and more than 290,000 street lights.”
