The Queensland Government’s Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages has extended the operating hours for its Marriage Room in Brisbane on Valentine’s Day with 12 couples tying the knot, Attorney-General and Justice Minister Kerry Shine said today.
Mr Shine said the 12 couples will exchange vows as they wed at the Department of Justice and Attorney-General’s Brisbane Marriage Room.
“So many couples have requested to use the facilities that the Registry has extended its weekday marriage times to accommodate those romantics wanting to marry on this special day,” Mr Shine said.
“Typically, 3½ hours are set aside for weddings each weekday. On Valentine’s Day, six hours will be needed to accommodate the wedding ceremonies.”
“To mark the occasion, every bride will receive a rose as a gift from the Registry.”
Mr Shine said the Brisbane Marriage Room had proved extremely popular since the registry relocated to heritage-listed Old Government Printery building at 110 George Street, near the Botanic Gardens in late 2005.
“The Marriage Room holds more weddings than any other venue in Queensland, with almost 1200 ceremonies held there in 2006,” Mr Shine said.
“There was a record 25,200 wedding ceremonies held in Queensland last year.”
Ceremonies are conducted during normal business hours weekdays and between 10am and 4:30pm on Saturdays. Registry weddings are also available in many courthouses in larger rural and regional areas throughout the State.
