FITZROY WATER PLAN REVIEW NEARS CLOSING DATE

Central Queenslanders can have their say on proposed amendments to the Fitzroy Water Resource Plan (WRP).

The deadline for submissions, and to nominate members for a community reference panel, is February 23.

This panel’s role is to identify issues and provide advice to the department on the proposed amendments to the WRP.

Minister for Natural Resources and Water Craig Wallace said the groundwater resources in the Isaac-Connors catchment, north-west of Rockhampton, played an important part in supporting the region’s economy, natural heritage and biodiversity.

“The amended plan will look to secure sustainable groundwater in the Isaac-Connors and Callide Valley catchments as well as supply urban and industrial needs,’’ he said.

“Like all water resource plans, it will also ensure sufficient water resources are allocated for the environment.’’

The proposed amendments will apply to all sub-artesian water contained in aquifers within the two catchments.

Public meetings were last year held at Nebo and Clarke Creek. Department officers have also met with stakeholders in the Callide region.

Information reports detailing the planning process are available at:
