Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
BRISBANE MOBILE INNOVATOR RECOGNISED INTERNATIONALLY
Brisbane mobile location services developer Locatrix Communications is in the running to win a prestigious international award after being selected as a finalist in the Mobile Monday Global Peer Awards, State Development Minister John Mickel said today.
Locatrix Communications is among just twenty finalists selected worldwide and was nominated for their revolutionary branded mobile social networking solution Uandme.
Mr Mickel said the Queensland Government was very pleased to support Locatrix Communications, which has benefited from membership at the government-funded i.lab Technology incubator as well as investment from the government’s teQstart fund.
“Locatrix is a great example of the kind of cutting edge technology companies that i.lab and teQstart were established to support and now the company is going to be a great ambassador for Queensland on the world stage.”
Like all the finalists the company was chosen via a selection process organized by local Mobile Monday chapters throughout the world, each choosing a company that has demonstrated exceptionally innovative mobile technologies, products, services and concepts. The live judging process will award prizes in three categories: Jury Favourite, Audience Favourite and Community Favourite.
Locatrix Communications CEO Mark White said it was fantastic to be selected as a finalist in the prestigious industry awards, which will be announced in a ceremony on Monday, 12 February, in conjunction with the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain from February 12 to 15, 2007.
Mr White said Uandme, which was recently deployed in Australia by Telstra Mobile will allow users to share their location with friends, helps you connect and share experiences as well as find a nearby place to meet like a coffee shop, restaurant or bar.
“Uandme can send you alerts when your friends are near, and allows you to see any or all of your friends’ locations on a map, or on a single mobile screen view,” Mr White said.
He said the application works on any GSM phone in conjunction with the networks.
“Being selected as a finalist in the Mobile Monday Global Peer Awards is fantastic international exposure for Uandme and Locatrix Communications within the GSM community worldwide.
“It is also a well-earned reward for our team and also reflects the growing interest in mobile social networking applications. We believe the Uandme solution is absolutely world-class, and look forward to showcasing it in Barcelona next week.”
Mr White said the contributions of the i.lab Incubator and that of investor teQstart were pivotal in assisting Locatrix to deploy Uandme.
Minister Mickel said the Toowong i.lab, established in 2000, was specifically designed to nurture young high-tech companies looking to turn their bright ideas into marketable products while Queensland’s early stage BioStart and teQstart investment funds managed by teQstart Pty Ltd aimed at stimulating the growth of the State’s high-technology, knowledge-intensive industries and attracting further venture capital investment into companies.
i.lab Incubator CEO Anne-Marie Birkill congratulated Mark and his team on their achievement and wishes them luck with the award.
“Locatrix Communications have been a member company at i.lab since September last year and are doing some amazing things. It is fantastic to see them doing so well and we believe the international exposure these awards will give them will only speed up their success.”
teQstart manager Ruth Drinkwater said as an investor in Locatrix since September, they were delighted the Locatrix product had been acknowledged in this way.
“As a Queensland Government owned organisation investing Government funds in early-stage Queensland companies, teQstart considers this accolade offers real recognition of the level of innovation in our state, promotes Queensland’s international reputation as well as directly adding value to the Locatrix brand,” Ms Drinkwater said.
Mr White said i.lab and teQstart were great government initiatives assisting small companies like Locatrix Communications, providing support and funding that better enabled them to take our products global.
