PREMIER OFFICIALLY OPENS $1 MILLION AUDITORIUM AT ATHERTON HIGH
Atherton State High School students, parents, teachers and the wider community will benefit in from the new $1 million auditorium officially opened by Premier Peter Beattie today.
“This facility adds an important dimension to the school which already has a proud history of serving the community for more than 47 years,” Mr Beattie said.
“The 165-seat auditorium is an excellent space for performing arts students and it complements the community hall.
“It will also be used as a lecture theatre which will give students a taste of university-style learning.”
Atherton High has a rich tradition of academic and sporting excellence. In 2004, it was named Queensland’s Rural School of the Year and Queensland School of Excellence in Vocational Education and Training.
“The State Government is pleased to provide the funds for the auditorium because it will enhance the learning experience offered by one of our State’s best high schools,” Mr Beattie said..
“It will also be an asset for the wider community because it is a convenient meeting place.”
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said Atherton State High has a student population of almost 1000, with a strong academic, vocational and sporting program.
“The school strongly supports students wanting to take a vocational approach and there are 92 students in school-based apprenticeships and traineeships in all areas of industry and trade,” Mr Welford said.
“This high number of apprenticeships reflects the tremendous support and commitment of the local community in the Atherton High students.
“With the Atherton campus of the Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE located at the high school, students have a very practical learning environment.
“The school is also enriched by an international component with a significant number of overseas students, mainly from Korea and Japan, visiting each year on study programs.
“As the only secondary school in town, Atherton High enjoys a close relationship with many of the community’s businesses, committees, clubs, and associations.”
