The Honourable Anna Bligh

Barnaby wrong - again and again and again

9 February 2007

The Deputy Premier Anna Bligh has condemned National Party Senator Barnaby Joyce for misleading Queenslanders and failing to represent the people of South East Queensland.

She said that this was despite her offering last October to brief Senator Joyce on the proposed Traveston Crossing Dam.

“Little wonder he continually makes claims about the proposed Traveston Crossing Dam that are misleading and wrong,” she said..

“Barnaby Joyce speaks from a position of determined ignorance.”

Examples:

? Senator told ABC Radio 612 last year (16-11-07) – Borumba Dam would provide 440,000Ml pa - whereas a Traveston Crossing Dam would only provide 150,000Ml.

JOYCE WRONG: The figure is in fact 40,000Ml. He got it wrong by a factor of 11.

? Senator Joyce said that the Traveston Crossing Dam could be replaced by a desalination plant at a cost of $500 million (Sunshine Coast Daily 9/2/07), but said $400m (ABC Coast FM – Gold Coast 5/02/07). He says the plant can supply 150,000 Ml pa of water.

JOYCE WRONG: A desalination plant that could deliver 150,000 Ml pa would have to be more than three times the size of the Tugun Desalination Plant presently under construction. The Tugun plant cost is $1.12 billion.

? Senator Joyce said that Traveston Crossing Dam would cost $4 billion (ABC FM Gold Coast 5/02/07)

JOYCE WRONG: Traveston Crossing Dam (Stage 1) is $1.7 billion.

? Senator Joyce said that the State Government has only delivered 500m of a 2,200km pipeline (ABC FM Gold Coast 5/02/07)

JOYCE WRONG: Western Corridor Pipeline is approximately 200km. All the pipeline projects (Northern, Southern, Western, Eastern together would be less than 600kms)

? Senator Joyce said that Brisbane will run out of water in 2008 (ABC FM Gold Coast 5/02/07)

JOYCE WRONG: Projects coming on line progressively [desalination, purified recycled water, demand management projects continuing] by 2008 to avoid this possibility.

Ms Bligh said that Senator Joyce was elected as a Senator for all of Queensland and not just for one region.

“There are people in South East Queensland who voted for him and he has to keep in mind their interests as well.

“He should also remember that the people of Brisbane and South East Queensland have demonstrated that they want water and elected a State Government to deliver it for them,” she said.
