Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR GREEN LIGHT FOR CULTURAL CENTRE
The Queensland Government will provide $4 million to help the Hinchinbrook Shire build the Ingham Cultural Complex in time for Queensland’s 150th birthday in 2009.
Premier Peter Beattie and Minister for Local Government and Planning Andrew Fraser today announced the project would be funded from the Legacy Infrastructure Fund, a $100 million capital works program to create legacies for Queensland’s 150th anniversary.
Cardwell Shire Council was also announced as a funding recipient.
“2009 is an important year for our State and we need to ensure there are lasting reminders of this milestone,” Mr Beattie said.
“We’ve identified a further 79 projects across the State that we believe will create a legacy and be enjoyed by generations to come. The proposed Ingham Cultural Complex is one such project.”
The project involves the development of a regional gallery, theatre, community meeting spaces, agricultural history interpretation displays and technology services for community and business use.
The centre will be integrated with the Tyto Wetlands Centre and linked via an all-weather elevated walkway.
Mr Beattie said Cardwell Shire Council would receive $100,000 toward the construction of a new library and museum complex adjacent to the Cardwell Post Office.
“The Cardwell and Ingham projects are designed to enhance the quality of life for the local community and ensure that residents and visitors alike have access to quality facilities and services.”
Mr Fraser said the project was required to meet specific criteria.
“When we asked Councils to submit their proposals last year, we were looking for practical tributes. That is, projects that would provide real and lasting benefits to the community for years to come,” he said.
Mr Fraser said the two Councils were now required to submit a project plan confirming a 2008 completion date and demonstrate their ability to secure any additional funds required to undertake the project.
