FUNDING BOOST FOR LOCAL 150TH CELEBRATIONS

GOONDIWINDI, Boonah and Clifton Shires will all receive funds from the Queensland Government to develop projects to mark Queensland’s 150th birthday in 2009.

Premier Peter Beattie and Minister for Local Government and Planning Andrew Fraser today announced projects from each of the three Shires would be funded under the Legacy Infrastructure Funding program, a $100 million capital works program to create legacies for Queensland’s 150th anniversary.

“2009 is an important year for our State and we need to ensure there are lasting reminders of this milestone,” Mr Beattie said.

“We’ve identified 79 projects across the State to date that we believe will create a legacy and be enjoyed by generations to come. Projects in each of these Shires are among those selected.”

A total of $450,000 has been allocated across the three Shires for a variety of projects.

Goondiwindi Town Council will receive $300,000 to refurbish the town Civic Centre to include a tiered theatre for use by local and visiting performing arts groups.

Boonah will receive $50,000 towards the development of a multi-purpose community facility to be built within the Aratula Sport and Recreation precinct. The building will provide much needed amenities for the precinct as well as becoming the only public meeting facility within the community.

Clifton Shire Council will put its $100,000 State Government funding toward building the Clifton and District Museum which will house an extensive collection of historical memorabilia.

Minister for Local Government and Planning, Andrew Fraser, said the projects were required to meet specific criteria.

“When we asked Councils to submit their proposals last year, we were looking for practical tributes. That is, projects that would provide real and lasting benefits to the community for years to come,” Mr Fraser said.

“I feel very confident that each of these projects will more than achieve this objective.”

Mr Fraser said each the Councils was now required to submit a project plan confirming a 2008 completion date and demonstrate their ability to secure any additional funds required to undertake the project.
