JOINT STATEMENT
Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
Minister for Local Government, Planning and Sport
The Honourable Andrew Fraser
$15,000 FOR COOLOOLA LEGACY PROJECT
The State Government will provide $15,000 to the Cooloola Shire Council to help it restore Carlton Hill Park in time for Queensland’s 150th birthday in 2009.
Premier Peter Beattie and Minister for Local Government and Planning Andrew Fraser today announced the project would be funded under the Legacy Infrastructure program, a $100 million capital works program to create legacies for Queensland’s 150th anniversary.
“2009 is an important year for our State and we need to ensure there are lasting reminders of this milestone,” Mr Beattie said.
“We’ve identified 79 projects across the State to date that we believe will create a legacy and be enjoyed by generations to come. The proposed development of Gympie’s Carlton Hill Park is one such project.”
The renovation of the park will include additional plaques, interpretive displays and photographs. A miner’s memorial will also be erected to commemorate the creation of the park in the late 1920s.
Mr Beattie said the restoration of Carlton Hill Park would celebrate the proud mining history of the region.
“The discovery of gold in Gympie played an important role in Queensland’s history and it is fitting that we pay tribute to the contributions made by miners and their families,” Mr Beattie said.
Minister for Local Government and Planning, Andrew Fraser, said the project – like all others considered for funding – was required to meet specific criteria.
“When we asked Councils to submit their proposals last year, we were looking for practical tributes. That is, projects that would provide real and lasting benefits to the community for years to come,” he said.
“I feel very confident that this project will more than achieve this outcome.”
Mr Fraser said Cooloola Shire Council was now required to submit a project plan confirming a 2008 completion date and demonstrate their ability to secure the additional funds required to undertake the project.
