$1 MILLION FOR BRISBANE LEGACY PROJECT

BRISBANE City Council will receive $1 million from the Queensland Government to develop cultural trails across the City in time for Queensland’s 150th birthday in 2009.

Premier Peter Beattie and Minister for Local Government and Planning announced the project would be funded under the Legacy Infrastructure program, a $100 million capital works program to create legacies for Queensland’s 150th anniversary.

“2009 is an important year for our State and we need to ensure there are lasting reminders of this milestone,” Mr Beattie said.

“We’ve identified a further 79 projects across the State to date that we believe will create a legacy and be enjoyed by generations to come. The proposed ‘Connecting Brisbane’ initiative is one such project.”

The aim of the project is to physically connect the Brisbane CBD with inner city precincts, key attractions, transport hubs and metropolitan centres through a series ‘emotional’ cultural trail experiences.

Sculpture, street art, sound installations, lights, signage and multimedia will be used to create each trail providing a cohesive tourist experience of Brisbane and showcasing the heart and soul of the City.

Mr Beattie said connecting Brisbane was an important initiative as the State moves towards its 150th birthday.

“The ‘Connecting Brisbane’ project will capture everything that is unique to the City’s past, present and future and provide an opportunity for locals and visitors to learn more about Queensland’s capital,” he said.

Minister for Local Government and Planning, Andrew Fraser, said the project – like all others considered for funding – was required to meet specific criteria.

“When we asked Councils to submit their proposals last year, we were looking for practical tributes. That is, projects that would provide real and lasting benefits to the community for years to come,” he said.

“I feel very confident that this project will more than achieve this outcome.”

Mr Fraser said Brisbane City Council was now required to submit a project plan confirming a 2008 completion date and demonstrate their ability to secure the additional funds required to undertake the project.
