The State Government will provide $16 million to the Gold Coast City Council to help fund and finish the Southport Broadwater Parklands project in time for Queensland’s 150th birthday in 2009.
Premier Peter Beattie and Member for Southport Peter Lawlor have jointly announced that the project is one of 79 to be funded under the Legacy Infrastructure Funding program, a $100 million capital works program to create legacies for Queensland’s 150th anniversary.
“2009 is an important year for our State and we need to ensure there are lasting reminders of this milestone,” Mr Beattie said.
“The State Government has approved a further 79 projects across the State that it believes will create a legacy and be enjoyed by generations to come. The Southport Broadwater Parklands is one such project.”
“The Southport Broadwater Parklands redevelopment will blend aspects of art and culture, events precincts, water, children’s play, and links with nearby areas,” Mr Beattie said.
Mr Lawlor said, once redeveloped, the Parklands would be one of Australia’s great foreshore parks and a major Gold Coast attraction.
“The Southport waterfront has played a significant role in the development of tourism on the Gold Coast and, indeed, helped build the tourism profile of Queensland,” he said.
“It is fitting then that an area that helped shape our past and our present will become part of our future.”
Mr Lawlor said the project - like all others considered for funding - was required to meet specific criteria.
“When the state Government asked Councils to submit their proposals last year it was looking for projects that would provide real and lasting benefits to the community for years to come,” Mr Lawlor said.
“I feel very confident that this project will more than achieve this objective.”
Mr Lawlor said that the Gold Coast City Council was now required to submit a project plan confirming a 2008 completion date and demonstrate its ability to secure the additional funds required to undertake the project.
