CEDAR GROVE WEIR PLANNING ON TRACK

Planning for the construction of the Cedar Grove Weir remains on track with an amended Logan Basin Water Resource Plan moratorium announced today.

Natural Resources and Water Minister Craig Wallace said the amended notice supported the existing moratorium and ensured the weir’s construction was not delayed by Department’s planning activities in the area.

“This weir is a key project within the overall Regional Water Grid and is being overseen by the Queensland Water Infrastructure on behalf of the Coordinator-General,” Mr Wallace said.

“Given that certain steps in the weir’s construction are expected to start before the overall Logan Basin Water Resource Plan (WRP) is finalised, this amended moratorium allows those activities to start without delay.”

Construction of the weir, which will hold just over 1000 megalitres, is expected to start in May 2007 and be completed by the end of 2007.

A moratorium is in place across the Logan Basin plan area to maintain the existing level of water resource development while water resource planning processes are progressed. That moratorium remains until the WRP is completed – expected to be released later this month.

“The final WRP will provide a framework for the sustainable management and allocation of water in the Logan Basin plan area,” Mr Wallace said.

“The State Government is moving quickly on its commitment to safely manage water supplies in South East Queensland and provide for our future regional water security.”

A public notice outlining the amended moratorium is appearing in local print media.
