EDENS LANDING TO RECEIVE NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICE BEAT

Edens Landing is one step closer to having its own Neighbourhood Police Beat, with the Beattie Government finalising settlement on a property on Loane Drive.

Police Minister Judy Spence and the Member for Waterford, Evan Moorhead, today welcomed the news that the residents will have their very own police beat by the end of March.

Ms Spence said the property is ideally located to provide a highly visible and accessible police presence to the community.

“This new police beat represents a $527,500 investment by the Beattie Government to improve community safety in the area,” Ms Spence said.

“Soon residents will have their very own police officer living amongst them as part of the community, to work with them to help further reduce crime and improve safety.

“Planning has already started to redevelop the low-set, three bedroom house as a beat by the end of March.

“The beat will be equipped with its own marked police vehicle to conduct patrols of the community to boost the service already provided at Beenleigh Police Station.”

Mr Moorhead said the new facility will support local police in their fight against crime by providing additional infrastructure and operational resources – as well an extra police officer.

“Residents have long supported the creation of a police beat in this area and it’s terrific to see this result,” Mr Moorhead said.

“The beat is well located in the heart of the beat area to provide a highly visible and accessible police presence, boosting the efforts of police from the Logan Police District.”

Mr Moorhead said the property is in addition to five other new beat locations on the Gold Coast and will be a welcome boost to policing services in the South Eastern Region.

“Police beats have already been established in Jacob’s Well and Biggera Waters,” Mr Moorhead said.

“New police beats in Norfolk Village, Arundel and Pacific Pines are currently being refurbished.

“They are part of a three-year, $10 million election commitment by the Beattie Government to build 25 new beats across the State.”

Ms Spence said the Beattie Government has increased police numbers in the South Eastern Police Region by more than 30% since it was first elected in 1998, from 862 to 1,231.

“We are focussing on ensuring Queensland’s police have the best possible infrastructure, resources and support to work with the community in fighting crime,” Ms Spence said.

“That’s why we are further boosting safety in the region with a commitment to establish a new $12.2 million police district and headquarters in Coomera in addition to a $2.7 million upgrade to Beenleigh police station.

“These projects will boost community safety by providing additional police resources to the region – as well as additional police.”

Ms Spence said the Neighbourhood Police Beat Program has expanded rapidly in every police region since it was launched in 1993.

“With 49 police beats operating across Queensland, we are helping police to work closely with residents to further drive down crime rates,” Ms Spence said.
