GOLD COAST HOSPITAL ELECTIVE SURGERY UP 20%

Gold Coast Hospital performed significantly more elective surgeries in the December quarter 2006 compared to the same quarter in the previous year, Health Minister Stephen Robertson said today.

Mr Robertson said the latest Public Hospitals Performance Report and Elective Surgery Waiting List Report released today showed Gold Coast Hospital is busier than ever before and is treating more patients than ever before.

“These reports reveal that Gold Coast Hospital is doing 20 percent more elective surgery than at the same time in 2005,” he said.

“During the December quarter 2006, 2,864 patients received elective surgery at Gold Coast Hospital, up from 2,389 patients in the three months to December 2005.

“This rise in elective surgery procedures can in part be attributed to local doctors’ willingness to continue to provide elective surgery sessions during the Christmas period.

“Further improvements to elective surgery waiting lists are expected following the completion this month of the refurbished angiography suite at Gold Coast Hospital.

“The new angiography suite will boost access to interventional vascular and neuroradiology services.”

Mr Robertson said Gold Coast Hospital also reported a 5.8 percent increase in emergency attendances to 1 January 2007.

“17,309 patients presented for emergency treatment in December 2006 compared to 16,361 during the same time in 2005,” he said.

“A second public emergency department under construction at Robina will ease pressure on the Gold Coast Hospital emergency department and improve access for local residents.

“The new Emergency Department – part of a $40 million development at Robina Hospital - is expected to be completed this year.”
