Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
COUNTDOWN TO STATE-WIDE CELEBRATIONS BEGINS: PREMIER
It’s official. The countdown to Queensland’s 150th birthday celebrations in 2009 has begun, Premier Peter Beattie announced today.
Unveiling the State Government’s $4 million Community Funding Program and new Q150 website, Mr Beattie urged Queenslanders to start planning their involvement.
“It’s a milestone – 150 years since Queen Victoria signed the Letters Patent which separated Queensland from New South Wales, a date that gave Queensland its statehood,” he said.
“2009 represents a unique opportunity for all of us to reflect on our history and look forward to the future with optimism.
“The community grants program will help kickstart celebrations by supporting organisations and groups right across the State so they all have an opportunity to get involved.
“Not-for profit groups, tertiary institutions, local councils and incorporated bodies will want to celebrate in their own special ways, and ways that are relevant to their region.
“That’s why the scope of projects to be eligible is wide ranging, from commemorative publications, events and exhibitions, to research projects and lecture series, to name just a few.
“Importantly, the grants program has been designed to be as flexible as possible.”
The Q150 one-off-community grants are between $2,000 and $10,000 and are being issued in three rounds.
Mr Beattie said applications for the inaugural round open today and close April 13. Successful applicants will be announced on Queensland Day, June 6, 2007.
The next two funding rounds will be offered in 2008.
“While 2009 is still two years away, now is the time for communities to start thinking about how they can be part of the celebrations. We’re planning a year-long program of activities and events, and I want to see every community join in.”
The application form and details about the grants program are available on the new Queensland 150th Celebrations website – www.q150.qld.gov.au
The website, also unveiled today, offers a range of information about Queensland and its history, the proposed celebration program for 2009 and how Queenslanders can get involved.
“Celebrations will run throughout 2009 and will be shaped around four themes – history, people, places and future,” said the Premier.
“Queensland’s 150th birthday of statehood is a time for Queenslanders everywhere to not only reflect on our past and imagine our future, but be part of it.”
