NEW BRISBANE CITY WALK LINKS BRISBANE’S GREEN SPACES

Residents and visitors alike can now enjoy a self-guided tour through the heart of Brisbane by using the new Brisbane City Walk map.

The Brisbane City Walk is a joint project between the Queensland Government’s Department of Public Works, Brisbane City Council and South Bank Corporation.

The Brisbane City Walk starts at the Visitor Information Centre in the Queen Street Mall, however, the circuit route means walkers can begin at any point on the route and be able to finish at the same point.

Premier Peter Beattie said the Brisbane City Walk supported the Queensland Government priority of promoting a healthier Queensland.

“The State Government is committed to supporting increasing active participation,” Mr Beattie said.

“Residents and visitors of Brisbane can improve their health and fitness by taking the walk and exploring some often overlooked city sights, as well as our major sightseeing spots.

“The walk links three of Brisbane’s major green spaces: South Bank Parklands, Roma Street Parkland and the City Botanic Gardens.

“It takes two to three hours, with frequent stops to enjoy highlights of Brisbane’s heritage such as City Hall, Anzac Square, the Windmill and other historic buildings.”

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said the full colour map provided directions for the circuit walk, as well as information about Brisbane’s heritage and green spaces.

“Featuring 30 sites along the way - and crossing over the Brisbane River on both the Victoria and Goodwill Bridges - Brisbane residents and visitors can experience some of Brisbane’s city best sites along the walk,” Cr Newman said.

South Bank Corporation Chief Executive Officer Malcolm Snow said the Brisbane City Walk was a great way to enjoy one of the city’s best assets.

“In view of the major new developments underway or planned, it’s important that public spaces, and in particular our central city parks are highly accessible.

“Green space differentiates cities in competition because it is a qualitative measure of liveability.

“More than 6 million people visit South Bank Parklands each year, and the Brisbane City Walk is a timely initiative which will ensure our riverfront spaces continue to provide recreational experiences for the people of Brisbane and our visitors,” said Mr Snow.

The majority of the walk is down hill or reasonably flat, with only one steep street. Walkers are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, a hat and sunscreen and drink plenty of water.

The Brisbane City Walk map is available from the Visitor Information Centre in the Queen Street Mall, the South Bank Visitor Information Centre in Stanley Street Plaza, the Rotunda in the City Botanic Gardens and available to download at www.ourbrisbane.com.
