Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
QUEENSLANDERS SET TO CELEBRATE AUSTRALIA DAY
Queenslanders have found many innovative and interesting ways to celebrate Australia Day and reflect on what it means to be Australian Premier Peter Beattie said today.
Mr Beattie, who began his Australia Day celebrations this evening by participating in a multi-faith ceremony at the Nepalese Peace Pagoda at South Bank, said Australians were fortunate to have so much to celebrate.
“Here in Queensland we enjoy a great climate and lifestyle, have a dynamic economy and enormous opportunities for ourselves and our children,” Mr Beattie said.
“We have people from 200 different countries who speak more than 150 languages. On Australia Day hundreds of new Queenslanders will take part in Australia Day citizenship ceremonies.
“As always, there will be celebrations in communities across the State. There will be formal activities, like the official flag raising ceremony I will attend in the Roma Street Parkland.
“But there will also be many less formal celebrations including the 2007 Australia Day Festival planned at Brisbane’s South Bank which is hosted by the State Government.”
The Australia Day Festival program of events includes:
• Australia Day movie marathon including The Crocodile Hunter, Smiley, The Man from Snowy River and Crackerjack at the Formal Gardens Green, South Bank, 10 am – 8 pm.
• Fun for the family with Talkin’ the Drum performances, Punch and Judy puppet shows, and free face painting from 11 am – 5 pm.
• Live performances at Suncorp Piazza including with the Brisbane Excelsior Band, Brisbane State High School Big Band, Ferny Grove Percussion Ensemble and the St David’s Welsh Society. There will also be the colourful cultural demonstrations from the Taiwan Friendship Association, 11 am – 5 pm.
There will also be a traditional Australia Day Fireworks at 7.30 pm followed by and
Australia Day Concert from 8 pm - 10.15 pm

“Almost every regional centre in Queensland has special events planned for Australia Day,” Mr Beattie said.
“For example Cairns will celebrate with a BBQ breakfast and flag raising ceremony on Trinity beach and Australia Day Awards ceremony at the Cairns Civic Centre.
“In Gladstone the Gladstone City Council is hosting a Fair Dinkum Australia Day at the Toondoon Botanic Gardens while Mount Isa is starting their celebrations early with breakfast on the lawn at the Mount Isa Civic Centre.”
