Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure
The Honourable Anna Bligh
QUEENSLAND TARGETS MELBOURNE IN JOBS RAID
18 January 2007
Cairns: Queensland’s job search moves to Melbourne in May with a jobs and lifestyle expo, Queensland on Show aimed at recruiting more than 1000 skilled workers to support the Smart State’s burgeoning economy, Acting Premier Anna Bligh said today.
Ms Bligh made the Show announcement in Cairns on a visit to the head office of construction and development firm, the CEC Group, which hired an engineer after sifting through applicants who attended the inaugural Show at Homebush.
The CEC Group is one of 300 Queensland businesses represented at the inaugural Queensland on Show in Sydney in August 2006.
“Queensland has billions of dollars of infrastructure and major projects under construction or planned over the next two decades and we are generating more jobs than we can fill,” Ms Bligh said.
“We want skilled workers from Melbourne to come to Queensland with their families so they can be a part of building tomorrow’s Queensland today and enjoy living in the Smart State where the weather is warm, the lifestyle’s great and the jobs are plentiful.
“We blitzed the Sydney skilled worker market last year with more than 1000 jobs on offer in Queensland, and now it’s Melbourne’s turn.
“In May Melbournians will be dreaming of warmer climes and through Queensland on Show we’ll bring Queensland to them to help them realise those dreams.
“We know many Victorian families move to Queensland already because they want to enjoy our Queensland lifestyle.
“Queensland’s a great place to live, work and play.
“We want to make the big decision to head north easier for them by helping them secure a job where they are needed the most and by also helping them to better understand the new location they are considering.
“The Show will be held at the Melbourne Convention Centre in the heart of the city on May 11-13.
“Up to 1500 real jobs will be on offer from businesses and government in Far North Queensland, North Queensland, Central Queensland, the Wide Bay Burnett, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Darling Downs and Western Queensland.
“Queensland has the highest job creation rate in Australia.
“Last year 97 000 jobs were created in Queensland.
“Jobs are being generated in health, education, construction, engineering, mining, tourism and hospitality to name a few,” she said
