Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Queensland’s high-tech manufacturing industry has received boost following the announcement of multimillion-dollar research and development funding from the Australian Government.
Minister for State Development John Mickel today congratulated the Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Composite Structures (CRC-ACS) on winning $3.62 million in funding under the Commonwealth Government’s highly competitive Cooperative Research Centre Programme
Mr Mickel said the funding had been leveraged from the Queensland Government’s $1.81 million commitment to Australian Aerospace during 2006.
He said Australian Aerospace and the CRC-ACS were undertaking high-tech R&D into the manufacture of fibre composite helicopter components including those for fuselages and stub wings.
“This Queensland-based project will now be expanded into a three-year rotary-wing research and development programme valued at over $10.32 million, further enhancing the Melbourne-based CRC’s decision to establish an R&D node in South-East Queensland.
“The Commonwealth funding further reinforces Queensland’s profile as the Smart State. It’s satisfying to know that our innovative programs - aimed at business growth and industry development - are now recognised by Canberra.’’
He said Australian Aerospace was a world-leading aviation company currently assembling and maintaining 22 Tiger Armed Reconnaisance helicopters and 46 MRH-90 Troop Lift helicopters for the Australian Defence Force at its Regional Centre of Excellence in Brisbane.
“The composite structures and high technology of this new generation of helicopters will attract world-wide attention and send a clear message that Queensland is a smart manufacturing location as well as a significant centre for aviation and aerospace activity.”
