TOWNSVILLE JOBSEEKERS MOVE FORWARD TO BETTER FUTURES

A $20 020 grant from the Queensland Government’s Training in Communities program will help 20 Townsville people improve and develop essential skills and their chances of employment.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said
Townsville Thuringowa Adult Tutor Group had received the grant for the Forward Skilling project to assist participants to improve skills in language, numeracy and literacy.

“This project provides participants with 100 hours of intensive tuition in a supportive learning environment,” Mr Mickel said.

“Participants will be helped to actively participate in the community and will be equipped with fundamental literacy and numeracy skills used in daily living.

“This will better equip them to gain sustainable employment or progress to further education or training.”

Townsville Thuringowa Adult Tutor Group manager Janette Parry said participants will receive an initial assesment which involves designing and developing a personalised training plan.

“We have an inclusive delivery style that encompasses vital pre-employment training and skilling strategies,” Ms Parry said.

“Participants will learn to apply literacy and numeracy skills in collecting, analysing and organising information, communicating ideas, planning and organising activities, working with others in small groups, solving problems and using technology.

“They will be taught by qualified teachers, tutors and trainers, and supported by voluntary tutors in classes no greater than five per group.”

Training in Communities is part of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative which together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle has helped to create more than 116 000 jobs across Queensland since 1998.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s Queensland Skills Plan which which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st century.
