The Honourable John Mickel
Two new employment projects are giving disadvantaged Gold Coast jobseekers the chance to gain skills and increase their employment options while value adding to their local communities.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the Gold Coast City Council had been granted $250 000 to employ disadvantaged jobseekers on two community projects.
“Twenty-two jobseekers will get paid work with eleven of those extending and renovating the Gold Coast Hockey Association facilities while the other eleven will upgrade Driftwood Park,” Mr Mickel said.
“These projects will give participants tangible and valuable skills to allow them to compete effectively in the employment market.”
Mr Mickel said the work would have significant positive community impacts.
Gold Coast City Council Mayor Ron Clarke said the Driftwood Park project would enhance local life by providing new trees, gazebos, seating and playground facilities and repairing the park surface and drainage.
“The Hockey Association project includes renovation and refurbishment of the existing clubhouse, preparation, painting and decoration of brick and cement render, interior painting and timber restoration, construction of reinforcing apparatus and internal and external brick walls for viewing enclosure to hockey complex,” Cr Clarke said.
“Each participant will develop work skills and back them up with training towards qualifications including a skid steer loader ticket, senior first aid certificate, construction induction blue card, traffic controller ticket, forklift licence, scaffolding ticket and working at heights qualifications.
“This work will allow the Association to host the 2007 Australian Men's Veteran Championships, the 2007 Premier League and State Open Women's Championships as well as the 2007 Australian University Games.
“The Gold Coast City Council has contributed $181, 500 towards materials and a further $53,600 to assist the coordination of the Hockey Association upgrade.”
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative has helped create more than 116 000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
