The Honourable Anna Bligh
COMMUNITY CABINET TO CELEBRATE 100 IN ATHERTON
12 January 2007
Queensland’s 100th Community Cabinet will be held in Atherton next month, Acting Premier Anna Bligh announced today.
Ms Bligh said the Far North was a fitting region to celebrate the significant milestone, with the first Community Cabinet held at Edmonton in July 1998.
“Since the Beattie Government was elected we have maintained a commitment to meet Queenslanders in their home towns and our return to the Far North, the home of the first Community Cabinet, is a fitting way to mark the 100th,” Ms Bligh said.
“Far North Queensland is a vibrant and thriving part of the State.
“It has demonstrated its resilience and community spirit in the wake of Cyclone Larry’s devastation last year and the Atherton Community Cabinet will recognise this achievement.
“It will also be a celebration of 100 Community Cabinets - as far north as Thursday Island, as far south as Stanthorpe, to Mount Isa in the west – and of the accomplishments and regional benefits that have occurred as a result.”
Ms Bligh said Community Cabinets were unique to the Smart State and provided Queenslanders and the Government with an invaluable opportunity.
“The unique access to Ministers and Directors-General allows Queenslanders to raise community issues, concerns and ideas directly with the Minister responsible and ensures the Government stays in touch with what is happening in our regions,” Ms Bligh said.
“The Beattie Government will remain committed to being a Government for all Queenslanders and this process plays a fundamental role in this commitment,” Ms Bligh said.
The Atherton Community Cabinet will be held on Sunday, 11 February, with details to be announced shortly. Cabinet will meet in Atherton on Monday, 12 February.
