End of an era: Fraser

Minister for Sport Andrew Fraser today announced with regret the retirement of Queensland Academy of Sport Chairman Doug Ryan.

Mr Fraser praised the contribution of Mr Ryan, who has been the Chairman of the QAS Board since the academy’s inception in 1990.

“Under Doug’s direction, the QAS has become one of the most successful sporting academies in Australia and indeed the world,’’ Mr Fraser said.

“He has been an avid supporter of the Queensland sporting community and has helped oversee innovative programs such as the academy’s talent search program.

“The academy, under Doug’s leadership, has followed the philosophy of being athlete-centred, coach-driven and service-supported.

“I thank him for his years of hard work and wish him all the best for the future.’’

Mr Ryan has held a number of significant roles including Chairman of the Brisbane Bullets basketball team and was one of the original owners of rugby league team, the Gold Coast Giants.

“I felt that it was time for someone else to take over the board - with new people come new ideas,’’ Mr Ryan said.

Mr Ryan listed the academy’s flagship swimming program as one of the highlights of his time on the board.

Mr Ryan’s last official duty as Chairman and member of the board is scheduled for February 14.

Mr Fraser added: “Doug Ryan is more than a giant in the Queensland sporting community, he’s a great Queenslander and a true gentleman.

“I’ve been fortunate that my time in this role has coincided with part of Doug’s contribution to the QAS.’’
