Multi-million dollar boost to Logan City power

Energex has commenced an $8.5 million upgrade project in Logan City which will provide a substantial boost to the local electricity network.

Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson said the majority of the project would be the revamping of the substation at Meakin Road.

“The project will boost the available power supplies in the Logan City area,” Mr Wilson said.

“The improvements will deliver a more reliable power supply to homes and business for years to come.

“This project is a key component of an integrated network upgrade in the area,” he said.

Member for Waterford Evan Moorhead said the project also included upgrades to electricity supplies in the surrounding area with work to occur in Meakin Road, Ellerslie Road and in a section of Loganlea Road.

“This is about ensuring Energex meets Logan’s current and projected power usage needs,” Mr Moorhead said.

“The power growth is currently forecast to grow by around 25% in the next five years.

Logan City is one of the fastest growing areas of south east Queensland and this population increase has resulted in a significant increase in demand for electricity.

“Plans are already well-advanced for additional works at substations at Tanah Merah, Woodridge, Kingston, Crestmead,” he said.

Energex is spending $643 million this year on the electricity network while a further $263 million has been set aside to maintain and operate the network.

Energex supplies electricity to around 2.7 million people in south east Queensland.

The company’s distribution area of 25,000 square kilometres includes almost 50,000km of underground and overhead electricity lines and cables, over half a million power poles, some 40,000 transformers and more than 260,000 street lights.
