New Landsborough substation powers up
Five thousand homes and businesses in the Landsborough area will benefit from the recently completed Energex substation.
Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson and Member for Glasshouse Carolyn Male today inspected the $8.3 million substation and associated powerline upgrades.
Mr Wilson said the upgrade would boost power capacity to Australia Zoo and southern parts of the Sunshine Coast and hinterland.
“The new infrastructure will provide the Landsborough area with a more reliable and robust power delivery network,” he said.
“Landsborough is one of the fastest growing areas on the Sunshine Coast and with this growth comes an increased demand for electricity.
“To meet this growth in electricity demand, in the next few years Energex plans to spend around $150 million on new electricity infrastructure for the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Wilson said.
Member for Glasshouse Carolyn Male said the newly completed work will ensure Energex can meet these current and projected power requirements for locals well into the future.
“The increased power provides Energex technicians greater options when restoring power faster after unexpected power interruptions such as storm damage,” Mrs Male said.
“The new substation is also part of a new regional support facility and pole depot in Caloundra Street which, once complete, will enable local crews to respond faster.
“Electricity usage on the Sunshine Coast is growing at an average of six per cent a year as thousands of new houses and businesses are built,” she said.
Energex is spending $643 million this year on the electricity network while a further $263 million has been set aside to maintain and operate the network.
Energex supplies electricity to around 2.7 million people in south east Queensland.
The company’s distribution area of 25,000 square kilometres includes almost 50,000km of underground and overhead electricity lines and cables, over half a million power poles, some 40,000 transformers and more than 260,000 street lights.
