ACTING PREMIER CALLS IN PETRIE TERRACE POLICE BARRACKS DEVELOPMENT APPLICATION

Acting Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure Anna Bligh has called in the development application for the Petrie Terrace Police Barracks site.

The call in follows an appeal being lodged to the Planning and Environment Court against Brisbane City Council’s approval of the development application.

“Under the Integrated Planning Act, I have the authority to make a State determination on this application and I have chosen to exercise this authority as it involves a State interest,” Ms Bligh said.

“It has taken years to identify the most appropriate form of development for this pivotal site on the fringe of the Brisbane Central Business District.

“I am concerned that the appeal against Council’s approval of the development would leave the status of the proposal unresolved for an indefinite period of time.”

“A $12 million pedestrian walkway being built to link the CBD with Suncorp Stadium passes through the Police Barracks site.

“Completion of this walkway project would be delayed if the development proposal was held up.

“The walkway passes over Petrie Terrace and takes pedestrian traffic into Caxton and on to Suncorp Stadium.

“This will make it easier for thousands of people to use Suncorp Stadium and also provide a significant boost for businesses in the Caxton Street area.

The $120 million mixed use development proposal at the Police Barracks site includes commercial offices, supermarket, cinema, specialty retail, restaurants and underground car parking.

The Council and Queensland Government through the City West Task Force have identified the Barracks site as being pivotal to the development and revitalisation of the City West Precinct. The proposed development is consistent with the Draft Barracks Master Plan and Roma Milton Plan developed by the City West Task Force.

“The development will improve the amenity of the City West precinct by refurbishing the heritage listed buildings on the site which have been left in disrepair for too long,” Ms Bligh said.

“The proposed development includes the construction of new buildings and structures sympathetic to the heritage values of the surrounding buildings and compatible with the surrounding precinct.

“The development will contribute to Council’s and the State Government’s goal to improve the attractiveness and liveability of the City West area,” Ms Bligh said.

“As a result of the call in, the appeal against the Council’s decision to approve the development application will have no further affect.

“By calling in this application I have now become the assessment manager and will reassess the application and issue a new decision notice in due course,” Ms Bligh said.
