Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS NORTHSIDE SKILLS

An $89 500 grant from the Queensland Government’s Training in Communities program will help 82 local people improve their literacy skills and chances of employment over the next 12 months.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said
Caboolture Community Adult Literacy Group had received the grant to administer the project for the second year running.

“This is a 12 month literacy project that continues with the strategic approach of last year’s Training for Tomorrow project and is offered across the Moreton Bay coastal and country region,” Mr Mickel said.

“The project achieved great results last year, helping 158 people over the year, 42 of whom also secured employment.

“This year 58 participants will undertake language, numeracy and literacy training and 24 participants will complete a volunteer tutor training course.”

Caboolture Community Adult Literacy Group president Merv Gardner said participant organisations involved with last year’s project will continue to work with Caboolture Community Adult Literacy Group to facilitate the literacy courses and volunteer tutor training.

“These organisations share a common client base of people living in areas with high unemployment and limited employment opportunities,” Mr Gardner said.

“We have been working with them over the years providing trainers and mentoring services so they can deliver reliable training.

“A part-time coordinator will be employed to oversee the entire project while individual trainers will mentor participants on a day-to-day basis.”

Participant organisations facilitating the literacy courses and volunteer tutor training include:

• Esk-Kilcoy Community Support Association
• Woodford Bush Family Connections
• Caboolture Neighbourhood Centre
• Deception Bay Neighbourhood Centre
• Homelife - Caboolture
• Peace Christian Church - Redcliffe

Training in Communities is part of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative which together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle has helped to create more than 116 000 jobs across Queensland since 1998.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s Queensland Skills Plan which will ensure skills and training for Queensland in the 21st century.
