STATE GOVERNMENT GRANT BOOSTS WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY IN QUEENSLAND

The Queensland Government has awarded more than $340,000 in grants to industry organisations working to improve workplace health and safety.

Employment and Industrial Relations Minister John Mickel said Workplace Health and Safety Queensland had awarded the grants after reviewing applications from around the state for funding under the Small Business Program Grants Scheme.

Mr Mickel said there were 18 applications from 14 organisations statewide, with seven projects awarded funding.

“These grants help industries to help themselves and their employees,” he said.

“The funding promotes safer workplaces by ensuring that those people who work in the industry and know the industry best of all are involved in researching safer practices and technologies.

“The grants are part of the Queensland Government’s commitment to safer, fairer and more productive workplaces.”

Award winners were:

? Bundaberg Fruit and Vegetable Growers – for a project involving safer tractor guard design changes ($5,000)

? Queensland Arboricultural Association – development of a simplified safety management system ($68,682)

? Restaurant & Catering Qld – Develop induction competencies ($23,190)

? Commerce Queensland – development of safety management system and induction program for manufacturing sector ($46,520)

? Joint submission by Timber Queensland, Baking Industries Association, Australian Steel Institute and Nurseries and Gardening Queensland – develop a web-based small business safety portal ($112,851)

? Composites Australia – Update, print and distribute Safety Wall Charts ($47,000)

? Queensland Hotels Association – Develop a simplified safety management system ($37,766).
