The Honourable Tim Mulherin

NEW AUSSIE PINEAPPLE COMING SOON TO STORES

The first ever home-grown Aussie pineapple will be hitting our supermarket shelves soon, Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Tim Mulherin said today.

“The Aus-Jubilee, locally bred on the Sunshine Coast, is the first Australian variety of pineapple produced,” he said.

“The Aussie pineapple is the result of some 15 years of research. The new pineapple was selected for its very high sugar content, aromatic flavour, firm flesh and good colouration,” Mr Mulherin said.

“It was also selected for its high Vitamin C content, which is twice that of the Smooth Cayenne, the pineapple industry’s major commercially produced variety.

“Most of all Aus-Jubilee is set to provide consistent quality to both growers and consumers with expectations that every pineapple selected because it looks good, will also taste good and not be affected by pineapple blackheart, translucent flesh or other internal blemishes.”

Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries senior horticulturist Dr Garth Sanewski said that the Smooth Cayenne pineapple traditionally seen in supermarkets is the only variety processed in Australia.

Its limitations as a fresh fruit led the Department to conduct a breeding program to develop new varieties with less acid and a range of exciting new flavours.

“Other imported varieties of pineapple are also being produced and marketed in Australia but the Aus-Jubilee is the first Australian variety,” said Dr Sanewski.

“The development of Aus-Jubilee is at the first stage of the commercialisation involving public taste testings that will confirm its suitability for large scale production in pineapple growing areas.”

Dr Sanewski said the major Brisbane based fruit and vegetable wholesaler, Favco Qld Ltd has been selected as the commercialisation partner for this process.

Supplies of Aus Jubilee should become available on supermarket shelves in two to three years as it enters commercial production.
