FUNDING BOOST TO TAKE MUSIC FESTIVAL TO MORE REGIONAL AREAS
More of the state’s regional centres will be involved in next year’s Queensland Music Festival, following an injection of an extra $1.25 million in Government funding.
Premier Peter Beattie and Arts Minister Rod Welford today announced the extra funding, which is on top of the $2 million in funding already provided to the festival.
“The Queensland Music Festival has been a real success story for the state in recent years,” Mr Beattie said.
“The last festival in 2005 had everything from bob cats dancing in Mount Isa to a corroboree in Cooktown.
“This additional funding will allow the 2007 Queensland Music Festival to present events at more regional locations throughout the state.
“Festival events will be held from as far away as Cooktown to Caboolture and as far west as Winton.
“The festival will also include the following new centres – Longreach, Emerald, Rockhampton, Gladstone and Bundaberg.”
Arts Minister, Rod Welford, said the Queensland Music Festival was held biennially in July.
“It involves communities throughout the state in the development of tailor-made programs which celebrate the distinctive characteristics and history of their towns,” Mr Welford said.
Member for Mulgrave, Warren Pitt, said the extra funding would also enable a one-off festival incorporating a unique music theatre and multi-media event to be held at Paronella Park in Innisfail.
“I hope the festival will help boost morale among the regional community, given the continued hardship in the aftermath of Cyclone Larry,” Mr Pitt said.
“This event should provide a much-needed boost to the region’s arts industry. The event will be inspired by oral histories about the Paronella family’s Spanish origins and remarkable life in Innisfail.”
