EPA HELPING SURFERS FIND THE BEST WAVES

Surfers can turn to the Environmental Protection Agency to help check the latest surf and wave report over summer.

Environment Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the EPA’s monitoring systems measured vital data about air pollution, wave heights and tide levels.

“The EPA records data from air quality monitoring stations, wave monitoring buoys and storm tide gauges, and the experts provide this information to the public, and analyse this data for forecasting purposes,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“Summer holidays are the perfect time to enjoy a range of outdoor activities, such as camping, boating and surfing.

“Many surfers visit the EPA web site, which displays wave height information, recorded by wave monitoring buoys at key coastal sites,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“Before making the trip to the Gold or SunshineCoasts, surfers can check the EPA web site, look at wave trends, and combine this with weather forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology to assess whether conditions are suitable.

Wave monitoring data is available from the EPA web site at www.epa.qld.gov.au/waves; and www.epa.qld.gov.au/tides
