Computer skills on rise in Smart State wide

The SmartState has got a little smarter in the last year when it comes to home computer skills and using the internet.

Premier Peter Beattie said a state-wide survey of 3,300 households has revealed that 81 percent of Queenslanders now have access to a home computer.

“The sixth annual Queensland Household Survey of Computer and Internet Usage showed a rising trend in the use of home technology,” Mr Beattie said.

“The number of Queenslanders with access to a home computer is up four percent from 2005, while Internet usage is up five percent.

“Households are benefiting from lower Internet costs, with nearly half the respondents paying less than $30 per month for their service.

“The rising use of technology has improved skill levels, with almost half of all respondents reporting good or very good computer and Internet skills.”

The survey was conducted by the Office of Economic and Statistical Research on behalf of the Queensland Government Chief Information Office.

“It is more comprehensive and up to date than any other available source of information, particularly in relation to rural and regional Queensland,” Mr Beattie said.

Full results of the survey are available online through the Queensland Government Chief Information Office Internet site http://www.qgcio.qld.gov.au/05_projects/household.htm
