DPI&F BACKS INNISFAIL’S FEAST OF THE SENSES

The Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries will continue its support for Innisfail’s Feast of the Senses with today’s announcement of a $10,000 donation towards the 2007 event.

Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries, Tim Mulherin, said the Feast of the Senses had become an iconic event for far north Queensland since it was initiated by DPI&F in 2004.

Staff at DPI&F’s South Johnstone Research Station, under the leadership of manager Pedro O’Connor and administration officer Sonya Long, in conjunction with a community committee initiated the Feast of the Senses to promote the far north’s primary industries and their value-added products.

“The annual event, generally comprising a market day extravaganza and a gala dinner, quickly became an important annual event not just on the Innisfail calendar, but for the whole wet tropical north.

“The 2006 Feast of the Senses held in March built on the success of the previous two events winning strong support from the community,” Mr Mulherin said.

“It was a tribute to Innisfail’s community spirit that the market day went ahead despite Cyclone Larry looming down on them on the Sunday.

“When the cyclone struck the next morning, we saw the same community spirit emerge even stronger than before.

“The DPI&F’s support for the 2007 event recognises this outstanding community spirit as well as the importance of the far north’s million-dollar primary industries to the Queensland economy.

Mr Mulherin congratulated the Innisfail community on the formation of the new organising community committee.

“This is very much a community event owned by the community and run for the community,” he said.

“The Feast of the Senses has strong recognition throughout the north and we need to continue building on this strength to highlight the importance of our primary industries.

“In addition to the $10,000, the DPI&F will offer in-kind support. DPI&F staff will be pleased to lend their expertise to help ensure the success of the 2007 even.”
