Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
QUEENSLAND PHOTOGRAPHY ON SHOW IN LOS ANGELES
The work of six innovative Queensland photographers will be showcased to American buyers at a prestigious art fair in Los Angeles in January 2007.
Minister for State Development John Mickel said the Queensland Centre for Photography is being assisted by the Queensland Government to attend Photo LA 2007 (18-21 January) to market the work of Queensland photographers.
“Photo LA is one of the largest and most established art fairs in the US market and provides exciting commercial opportunities for our talented visual artists,” Mr Mickel said.
“The photographers who will have their work represented are all Brisbane-based – Marian Drew (Hemmant), Paul Adair (Rochedale), Ray Cook (New Farm), Martin Smith (Ashgrove), Nathan Corum (South Brisbane) and Renata Buziak (Bardon).
“Marian, Paul and Martin will join the Director of Queensland Centre for Photography, Maurice Ortega, at the fair in LA.
“We have some outstanding artists here and their skills really stack up on an international level which is something I think US buyers will readily recognise.
“Queensland has world class bands like Powderfinger and writers such as David Malouf. The same goes for our photographers – Tracey Moffatt, for example is considered one of Australia’s most successful international artists.”
Mr Mickel said that this is the first time Queensland photographers have featured at Photo LA and the opportunity has arisen via the Department of State Development and Trade’s International Showcase Series.
The $17,000 in financial support provided by the Department covers costs including booth hire at Photo LA, promotional catalogues, freight and advertising. The venture is also being supported by Arts Queensland and the Federal Government through the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, as well as Griffith University and the Queensland College of Art.
“The International Showcase Series is designed to fast-track Queensland creative artists into the global market,” the Minister said.
“The Series, which is run by the Department’s Creative Industries unit, has had enormous success to date, particularly for Queensland musicians and writers.
“Since 2004, it has helped promote the work of local writers and musicians at events such as Musexpo in Los Angeles as well as writers showcases in New York and Los Angeles.
“These showcases target literary and music agents along with film and television producers and are an entry into a very lucrative market.
“The International Showcase Series has resulted in an astounding $1.4 million in commercial deals for Queensland artists.”
Mr Mickel said that the Queensland Writers Showcase in Los Angeles in 2004 led to
Nick Earls’ book, 48 Shades of Brown being made into a movie. After the 2005 New York Showcase Rebecca Sparrow and Pamela Rushby gained US representation.
In addition, after attending Musexpo 2006 Brisbane band The Boat People was signed up by US music publisher A&R Worldwide. Their video for ‘Unsettle my Heart” received heavy rotation on cable TV channel IMF going into 10 million US homes.
“I think the possibilities for our photographers are equally exciting,” Mr Mickel said.
