New respite centre to be built in Mackay
Mackay children with a disability and their families and carers are set to benefit from funding of more than $1.4 million for a new respite care centre.
Acting Minister for Disability Services, Kerry Shine, said the funding would enable the Mackay and District Education Centre (MADEC) to build and manage the respite centre for children with a disability.
Mr Shine said the centre was part of a state-wide initiative to increase support for children with a disability and their families and carers.
“The Queensland Government recognises the outstanding role that families and carers provide in caring for children with a disability,” he said.
“However, we also recognise that there are times when families and carers need a break from that caring role, which is why respite services such as this are so important.”
The Member for Mackay and Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries, Tim Mulherin, said MADEC would receive $700,000 to build the centre, $200,000 for a mini-bus and specialised equipment and furniture, as well as recurrent funding of $553,000 to run the centre.
“The respite centre will house up to four young people each night,” he said.
“The centre will also contain a purpose-built activity centre for large group activities and to conduct life skill training programs.”
Negotiations are underway with the Mackay City Council about a possible site for the centre.
