Another $250k for Yangan pipeline: Fraser
Local Government Minister Andrew Fraser has urged Warwick Shire Council to reconsider its stance on the Yangan water pipeline, committing a further $249,297 in State funding for the project today.
Mr Fraser said the new funding came in addition to a commitment of $500,000 made by the State Government in October – however at that time the council considered the pipeline scheme still beyond the financial resources of the community.
He said the new funding brings the government contribution to $749,297 - or 60 per cent of the total project cost.
“This new injection of funding now puts the project well within the financial reach of council,” Mr Fraser said.
“A council planning study in 2003 found the water pipeline from the Warwick plant was the most financially viable option for council to progress.
“The pipeline would deliver water produced at the treatment plant to Yangan, providing an alternative water source to the town and a more environmentally friendly way of disposing waste water.
“Council needs to consider the needs of the Yangan residents and make its own financial commitment to the project.
“This is a council project – a very worthy council project – but the State Government can not be expected to pick up the entire tab.”
