Sarina to get water pipeline from Mackay: Fraser

The Sarina Shire Council will receive an additional $3 million from the Queensland Government to build a 19km water pipeline from the Mackay Water Treatment Plant to the town of Sarina.

Local Government Minister Andrew Fraser the funding – in the form of an interest free loan from government – was in addition to the $3 million grant the council had received in November for the pipeline project.

“When this grant was made available in early November, the Sarina Shire Council said the total cost of $8 million for the pipeline was not achievable,” Mr Fraser said.

“This interest free loan of $3,080,000 makes it achievable.”

Mr Fraser said it was often impossible for councils to fund large-scale water infrastructure in small communities because of the per capita cost of projects.

“This is a major undertaking on the part of Sarina Council, but it is vital to ensure the residents of Sarina and the northern beachside townships get a long-term water supply.

“The project will involve the construction of a 19km water supply pipeline between the Mackay Plant on Nebo Road and the Alligator Creek Water Pump Station in the northern part of Sarina.

“Council will then buy the treated water from Mackay Council to supply residents.”

Mr Fraser said the funding was part of a $42m package for small communities across Queensland, just one way the Beattie Government was delivering on its commitment to secure water supplies for all Queenslanders.
