Out with the old – Hughenden to get new sewerage network: Fraser

The first phase of replacing Hughenden’s 59-year-old sewerage network is set to go ahead thanks to $3.2 million in State Government funding.

Local Government Minister Andrew Fraser today announced the State Government would fund 80% of the costs for council to replace the town’s trunk sewerage mains.

“Hughenden’s sewerage network was built in 1947 and after nearly 60 years it’s time the system was replaced to prevent blockages, overflows and discharges related to the age of the pipes,” Mr Fraser said.

“Hughenden’s sewers are some of the oldest in Queensland, but unfortunately for anyone who may be fond of the old pipes, a sewerage network is not something we keep around for its heritage value.

“I met recently with the Flinders Shire Mayor Brendan McNamara and agree that after nearly 60 years this system is no longer effectively meeting the needs of the community.

“Due to its age and the nature of the ground conditions, it’s beyond repair so council is planning to progressively replace it.

“There are potential health risks and environment concerns with sewerage overflows and discharges, so I am pleased to support council on this important project.

“The replacement of this system will not only improve health standards for the community, but increase its chances of securing economic development opportunities.”

Mr Fraser said the funding had been provided through the State Government’s Smaller Communities Assistance Program (SCAP).
