Strategy heralds a new approach to Indigenous sport and recreation: Fraser

The Queensland Government today launched a new strategy to encourage more Indigenous Queenslanders to get involved sport and active recreation.

Sports Minister Andrew Fraser was joined by Broncos great and former Test centre Steve Renouf to launch the Active Murri and Ailan People Strategy.

Mr Renouf is regarded as one of Australia’s great rugby league players of Aboriginal heritage and since retiring from elite sport, has worked to promote physical activity in Queenslanders.

Mr Fraser said he was delighted to have “The Pearl” on board and said the Active Murri and Ailan People Strategy provided a more flexible approach in providing funding, advice and support to Indigenous communities.

As part of the strategy, leadership camps set up for teenagers around the state. The camps will use sport and recreation as a vehicle to develop future potential leaders in communities.

Sporting identities will also visit and conduct workshops in Indigenous communities and a greater percentage of funding will be made available to Indigenous communities.

“Sport and active recreation are a natural part of our way of life in Queensland and the State Government recognises the important role it plays in strengthening Indigenous communities,” Mr Fraser said.

“It not only provides social and physical benefits to individuals but also benefits communities by building social networks and keeping youth involved in healthy, positive activities.

“Research from AC Nielsen tells us Indigenous people are less likely to be involved in physical activity and a key outcome of this strategy is to increase participation.

“We have established a dedicated Indigenous Sports Unit which will streamline communication with Indigenous communities and ensure effective implementation of the strategy.’’

State member for Inala Annastacia Palaszczuk also praised the initiative and added: “Physical activity also provides a sense of achievement and has the power to address other social problems.

“It boosts self confidence, self-esteem and promotes team work and a sense of belonging.’’

Mr Fraser said the strategy was all about listening to communities and responding to their priorities with timely and flexible solutions.’’

“The government recognises that many Indigenous people have aspirations to participate in sport and recreation activities but currently may not have the same level of access to opportunities and services as other Queenslanders.’’

Mr Fraser said it was important to note that the strategy was open for consultation and the government was seeking feedback from Indigenous communities.

“This is an important document and we are very interested to receive input from all of our Indigenous stakeholders to help guide us towards the delivery of the finalised strategy.’’
