The Honourable Margaret Keech
TOURISM FORAY INTO INDIA
Queensland has a tourism marketing manager for the first time in India, Tourism Minister Margaret Keech announced today.
Mrs Keech said Ms Supriya Correa was based at the Tourism Australia office in Mumbai.
“Having Queensland representatives on the ground in a lucrative emerging market such as India is crucial to further boosting international visitors to our state,” Mrs Keech said.
“It is imperative that we take advantage of the enormous growth we have seen recently in this rapidly emerging market.
“In the year ended June 2006, Queensland hosted more than 22,000 visitors from India, an increase of 25.8 per cent on the previous year.
”Our research suggests that there is enormous potential in specific market segments, including families and honeymooners, as well as business tourism.
“We will be developing a strong marketing presence in India, working together with local trade and the airline industry to develop future tourism opportunities.”
Mrs Keech said Tourism Australia hosted an India Travel Mission recently in Cochin with 45 Australian operators meeting with more than 100 travel agents from around India during the week-long event.
“Queensland had the largest representation of all Australian states at the mission with 13 products promoting the best of our tourism attractions and facilities,” she said.
“Our international offices and representatives are integral to attracting international visitors to Queensland.
“They are on-the-ground in key markets and can therefore tap into local and regional needs and ensure that Queensland is an attractive option for travellers in both established and emerging markets.”
