SUNSHINE COAST GETS THUMBS UP FOR HIGH TECH DIAGNOSTICS
BUDERIM: Premier Peter Beattie today inspected new medical facilities which will give an estimated 140,000 Sunshine Coast residents access to the most advanced diagnostic imaging technology available in Australia.
“Queensland Diagnostic Imaging has invested a total of $10 million on new world-class equipment in the South East, including facilities in Buderim, Caloundra and at St Andrews in Brisbane,” Mr Beattie said.
“That means residents from Buderim, Noosa, Nambour, Maroochydore and Caloundra will be the big winners because they have access to the very best diagnostic equipment – and close to home,” he said.
“Where local facilities are available, it makes a lot of sense for people to use them instead of travelling to Brisbane.”
The $3 million Sunshine Coast upgrade includes installation of some of the most advanced specialist diagnostic imaging equipment currently operating in Australia.
Queensland Diagnostic Imaging’s (QDI) upgraded facilities at Buderim include a state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner and 64-Slice CT Scanner.
The MRI scanner, which incorporates revolutionary Total Imaging Matrix (TIM) technology, uses magnetic fields and radio waves so doctors can “see” abnormalities and injuries to soft tissues, such as the brain, spinal cord, muscle and internal organs.
QDI State Manager Wally Bourdelov said the new technology provides high resolution full-body images faster, helping doctors diagnose and treat patients more effectively.
The 64-Slice CT Scanner can be used in a wide variety of applications including detecting tumors, cardiac imaging and screening tests, cancer investigations, trauma injuries and pain management.
“The upgrade at Buderim will facilitate up to 200 patient episodes per week,” Mr Bourdelov said.
“This new technology can also eliminate the need for other procedures that may be less effective or more expensive,” he said.
QDI is one of the State’s largest providers of imaging services, working with some 5,000 South East Queensland doctors each year to provide CT scans (sometimes referred to as CAT scanning), MRI, general X-ray, ultrasound, dental X-Ray and bone mineral densitometry.
