$7.3 million Redlands power upgrade complete

More than 20,000 homes and businesses will benefit from the completion of a $7.3 million power upgrade at Birkdale.

Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson said a new substation at Randall Road would provide power to suburbs stretching from Capalaba to Birkdale and south to Cleveland.

“This project is timely for the local community heading into the hot summer months,” Mr Wilson said.

“The substation will boost capacity and provide a more reliable power supply.

“The project provides Energex with greater options when restoring power to residents during times of unexpected power interruptions such as storms,” he said

Member for Capalaba Michael Choi said the Redlands had experienced unprecedented growth in recent years.

“The high population growth that we have been experiencing leads to more demands on the local power supply,” Mr Choi said.

“I thank the community for their patience during the works to the local power network,” he said.

Energex is spending $643 million this financial year on the electricity network while a further $263 million has been set aside to maintain and operate the network.

Energex supplies electricity to a population of around 2.7 million people in south east Queensland.

The company’s distribution area of 25,000 square kilometres includes almost 50,000km of underground and overhead electricity lines and cables, over half a million power poles, some 40,000 transformers and more than 260,000 street lights.
