State funds to assist Cairns Botanic Gardens redevelopment: Fraser
CairnsCity’s $4 million upgrade of the FleckerBotanic Gardens and Tanks Precinct has received a major funding boost, with an additional $1.8 million towards the project.
Local Government Minister Andrew Fraser and Cairns MP Desley Boyle said an extra $1,882,500 had been provided through the Regional Centres Program, bringing the total state subsidy for the project to $2,276,200.
“This landmark project will preserve the cultural and historical significance of the area as well as providing new recreational, environmental and entertainment facilities,” Mr Fraser said.
“The result will be a precinct that is home to a vast array of natural attractions, unique flora, fresh and salt water lakes, mangrove habitats and a forest canopy walk.
“Together with facilities such as visitors centre, cafes and restaurants, the precinct will offer residents and visitors an opportunity to experience a beautiful part of Cairns’ culture and environment.”
Ms Boyle said the redeveloped precinct will cover the FleckerBotanical Gardens, Tanks Arts Centre and CentenaryLakes, with linkages to other key precincts including Mt Whitfield Conservation Park, Red/Blue Arrow Walking Trails, Greenslopes Street Cultural Precinct and the Edge Hill Shopping Precinct.
“The redevelopment will be terrific for Cairns - the gardens are already popular with locals and tourists and this work will make them even better,” Ms Boyle said.
Ms Boyle said the Queensland Heritage Council had recently listed the tanks and the gardens on the Queensland Heritage Register.
“The Heritage Council granted an exemption to allow the council to realign Collins Ave and to get work started before the wet season.
“This is an exciting project that will enhance the gardens’ role as a vibrant environmental and cultural precinct.”
