Minister for Police and Corrective Services
The Honourable Judy Spence

WENDY EDMOND APPOINTED TO PROSTITUTION LICENSING AUTHORITY

Former senior government minister Wendy Edmond has been appointed as a member to the statutory authority that oversees Queensland’s legal brothel industry.

Police Minister Judy Spence today announced Ms Edmond had become one of eight members of the Prostitution Licensing Authority, with a role to represent the community’s interests.

“Wendy Edmond is extremely well-placed to represent community interests on the board, due to her extensive experience and involvement in community matters,” Ms Spence said.

“Ms Edmond was a nuclear medicine technologist and radiographer before her election to Parliament at the 1989 election.

“She became Minister for Employment and Training following the temporary re-election of the Goss Government in 1995, becoming Shadow Minister for Health when Labor moved into Opposition in February 1996.

“She retained the portfolio as Minister for Health since the Beattie Government was elected to office in June 1998, and retired from parliament in 2004.”

Ms Spence said the Prostitution Licensing Authority was set up under the Prostitution Act 1999 to monitor Queensland’s licensed brothels, and to decide on licence applications.

Under law, the Authority is required to have eight members, including:
• An independent chairperson;
• The Commissioner of Police or a police officer of at least the rank of Superintendent;
• The chairperson, or the assistant commissioner, crime, of the Crime and Misconduct Commission;
• A doctor who has at least five years’ experience in community health;
• A lawyer who has been admitted for at least 5 years and has knowledge of, or experience in, administrative law, company law or criminal law;
• A senior representative of the Local Government Association of Queensland; and
• Two people who are qualified to represent community interests.

Ms Spence said Ms Edmond had been appointed to fill the recent vacancy following the resignation of Lynette Palmen, one of the community representatives on the Authority.

Ms Edmond’s appointment will run until May 3, 2008, when the appointments of the chair and current members expire.
