Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
VIRGIN BLUE PLAN COULD LINK BRISBANE TO USA: PREMIER
Premier Peter Beattie’s campaign to have Virgin Blue fly direct out of Brisbane to the USA received a shot in the arm today.
Mr Beattie welcomed Virgin Blue’s announcement to fly long-haul between Australia and the USA which was made this morning when it released its 2006/07 profits to the Australian Stock Exchange.
“Introducing flights to the USA from 2008 will open up many opportunities to expand Queensland‘s tourism as well as our trade and business reach,” Mr Beattie said.
The USA is Queensland’s fifth largest source market for international visitors, with 174,000 Americans visiting the State in the 12 months to September 2006.
In 2005-06, the USA was Queensland’s 6th largest market for exported goods – worth $1.45 billion to the State economy.
“Of course we want Virgin to include its home base of Brisbane in the new international itinerary, and I’ll be campaigning to make sure this happens,” Mr Beattie said.
“I’m passionate about promoting Queensland so I congratulate Virgin Blue on its international plans and I look forward to welcoming the new flights to Brisbane.
“The initiative will attract more investment to our State, create more new jobs, business opportunities and greater community wealth.”
