Caxton Street entertainment precinct to be made safer for everyone: Fraser

Patrons and visitors to Caxton Street will benefit from an innovative partnership program designed to improve safety and reduce the incidence of alcohol-related violence.

Proposed measures include a “designated driver” initiative which will see hotels and clubs offer free soft drinks to a nominated driver.

Local Government and Planning Minister and local Member Andrew Fraser said today’s official launch of the Caxton Street Precinct Liquor Accord was a significant step towards creating a safer environment for everyone in the community.

“Today’s launch of the Liquor Accord demonstrates the proactive and responsible approach being taken to ensure the safety of visitors and patrons to Caxton Street and indeed throughout Brisbane,” Mr Fraser said.

“The ultimate goal of this accord is to reduce the incidence of violence and create a safer environment for the enjoyment of everyone, without compromising the unique character of the Caxton Street entertainment precinct.”

Communities Minister Warren Pitt said the Liquor Accord was indicative of the strong partnership between local licensees, Brisbane City Council and various Queensland Government departments.

“The accord is being implemented as part of the Inner City Community Safety Strategy and Premier Peter Beattie’s 17 point plan, which continues to demonstrate the benefits of proactive partnerships to address issues of common interest and concern,” he said.

The Department of Communities and Brisbane City Council have provided funding for the accord to assist with the implementation of several safety initiatives already underway in the Caxton Street precinct.

Mr Fraser said these include strategies to improve safety at taxi ranks and the dispersal of patrons.

“I would like to congratulate everyone involved in this partnership for their commitment to creating safer communities through the responsible service of alcohol and ultimately the reduction of alcohol-related violence,” Mr Fraser said.

“This partnership will help licencees to keep their patrons and their premises safe, particularly as the number of visitors to the Caxton Street precinct is expected to rise following future developments of the former Queensland Barracks on Petrie Terrace.”
